    Hi all-

I’ve installed/setup modx successfully on other web hosting sites and even on my local workstation.

I have a free 1and1 webhosting account that I have been trying to install modx on, but can’t get past the install.

I will get to the page where it does all the checks for read/write of the different files/directories. And it fails on the 2 files in the cache directory as not writable.

Before jumping on me to use chmod, I will pre-empt and say that I’ve tried every combination of chmod 777 (on the cache directory, on the files, you name it...) that I could think of. undecided

I’ve searched thru these forums and found no love. I’ve seen in these forums that people were successful with using 1and1 as a hosting solution, but I haven’t run into anyone that had issues with just the install part. Hoping to hear from someone that hit my snag...

If anyone has had experience using 1and1 webhosting, please lend a helping on this bizarre install problem. Thanks!

PS - modx by far is the most intuitive cms i have ever seen.... MODX rocks!

Thanks for the kind words. The more folks come on board, the more we see issues with free hosting accounts. Enough so that we added it to a newly added (and soon to be growing) FAQ section of our site: http://modxcms.com/faq

Hmmm, are we talking about 1&1 ?

I have reports on the french side that MODx is working on 1&1...

The only thing that has been reported is the need to comment out both zlib lines and add a RewriteBase / directive in .htaccess if you’re using clean URLs...

I have a staging server running on 1&1 (U.S.), with currently five installs on a single single webspace in five different directories.

I’ve had zero problems installing or running on 1&1.

One of the things I *adore* about MODx is that it runs very happily on a wide variety of hosts. Joomla (which I used to use) is very, very picky about the configuration of the server. But, MODx runs like a charm on every host I’ve tried it with.

So are you saying that in your ftp client the files And directory all read as 777 but the script says they’re not?

Or will the changes not "stick" in the ftp client either?

You can add hostingzoom if you happen to be keeping a list smiley

I wish it was that simple laugh I actually use an ssh shell and see the files/directories all read 777.

So the changes are staying, hopefully. Could you not verify the chmod of those files with a garden variety ftp client though or am I missing something? The only things I can think of that could cause this are 1. a windows server, forget that one, and 2. I’ve seen weirdness with chmodding if the ownership of the file gets changed. You could check the chown of them just for a hoot.

Very odd problem if some files/folders will change and others won’t.

Hi Spike, please post the output of ’ls -l’ on each directory that the installer complains about
