I tried the gallery from here:

which works pretty nice, however the JS he have there uses the
<a href="path/to/image.jpg"> to display the big image.
so if I have the following as my &galleryPictureTpl it’s working nice, but clicking on the image opens both the popup gallery and the image itself in another window because of that.

I tried using <a href="javascript:void(0);" onclick="....." onmouseover="..." >
but that results in no big image on the screen and my source reads
<img src="javascript:void(0);">
