hi all
I am a novice to Modx .. i have been trying to get understand how the whole system works .. this is proving a little difficult ... i have bee able to work the template and add articles in .. i am now looking at learning to add a gallery .. i have worked with Joomla and this system is so very different .. i am not sure how to get this all working ... just where should i be putting the assets folder .... I am trying to set up the gallery .... hmm i know this is probably so simple.. i just would like somebody to give a pointer in the right direction ... i have read the wiki and have not had much luck there .. is there a starting point or something that I am maybe missing .... thanks

The assets folder (directory) is already in your site root. You have the manager folder, the assets folder, and the index.php file there, along with the ht.access file (that gets renamed to .htaccess to handle the rewriting of the URLs for Friendly Urls) and a utility file called ajax-index.php.
The manager folder you should never need to mess with; it contains the files for the Manager. The assets folder has the cache, a folder for any external snippet files, one for javascript files, one for site images, one for plugins, one for modules, and one for your template’s CSS and images.
To run MaxiGallery, you need to create another folder in that assets folder called "galleries" and make sure it’s writable (this depends on your server’s configuration), since the MaxiGallery script will need to be able to write into that folder to upload and manipulate the images and thumbnails.

It can get confusing at first, there are "folders" in the document tree in the Manager that are documents with children, then there are "folders" that are directories in your file system!
I remember thinking that would cause confusion way back when graphical interfaces began to become popular. Just because they used a cute little icon of a folder didn’t mean they weren’t still directories.
And I prefer to call the document "folders" containers.

Most fpt uploads will only replace new/changed files, so just putting the extracted assets folder into your site root will just add the new files/folders necessary, existing files and folders won’t be changed. Basically, just do what the instructions say to do, and you’ll be fine.
When I was new to it, I wasn’t sure at all it would work the way you say. If it does - fine!

OS X doesn’t work like that; if you drag or paste a folder, it replaces the original and all of its content! I am not sure what Windows does; it’s been years since I’ve used it for anything more than checking on how badly IE has trashed my site
