Forgive me if this is obvious and I’ve missed it somewhere...
Client wants image galleries to be searchable so site visitors can find "Joe Smith" if it appears in the title and/or description for an image. Are those indexed and searchable within MODx?

No, you have to modify some search snippet to also search from maxigallery db table
