IE7 upload difficulties, anyone?

Hello All!
Wow, just getting into Maxigallery, and it’s killer. I had some difficulties getting everything to work - I mainly chalk that up to Maxi’s handling of so many different apps under the hood, and all those little different settings. But now I have a "portfolio" of 5 different flavors to show clients!

I am still having one difficulty... IE upload problems, getting the usual "Fatal error: Allowed memory size exhausted" on the thumbnail creation number-crunching. So as per the Wiki I asked for some PHP.INI changes, and those worked great for FF and IE6... but IE7 is still choking on pretty small files. It’s funny that on the surface it looks like IE7 is a downgrade from IE6.

I just asked tech support for REALLY big numbers in those settings. I hope that works, but I’m not entirely confident. I’ve also read that sometimes IE7 plug-ins can interfere with uploading.

Anybody else having trouble uploading pics to Maxigallery with IE7?

First time I heard that browser could have some effect on how much the server takes memory or other system resources on upload.. I guess that’s possible then.. I don’t have any help to offer right now other than to say, that if you like coding, take a look at http://digitarald.de/project/fancyupload/

Wow, that does look slickalicious. I’ll have a look at that if I get some free time. Since I’m nowhere near the coder you are, and I’m working in "fast troubleshooting" rather than "optimize it" mode, I think I’ll forego using it just now.

I asked my host to quadruple the usual settings that one sees in the Wiki, they did it, and finally IE7 is doing a little better, up to nearly 1M without choking. The PHP.INI numbers are pretty big now, and it’s funny to see it still struggle just to handle 1M. I could also try to re-write the upload code, but in triage mode, who has the time?

Since the pics involved will be plenty adequate at that size, my boss is going to leave it as is, and educate the client not to make the pics any bigger.

A few issues seem to be affecting IE 7 and file uploads:

I’ve also seen these settings recommended for large file uploads (pdfs, in this case); my point is take a look at the ratio of file size to memory:

upload_max_filesize = 16M
max_execution_time = 60
max_input_time = 120
memory_limit = 64M

Sounds strange.. It shouldn’t take so much resources I think.. but oh well...

When I did the MaxiGallery snippet, I just did it for a friend for his site and didn’t pay much attention to the performance.. (it’s based on another snippet). If you’re a coder and take a look at the code, you will notice that it’s all mess.. just horrible code. But it works...

I will do a new gallery for 0.9.7 at some point and build it from scratch, but I haven’t had much time to invest in coding on my free time lately.. or actually in long time.. But I will do it someday, unless someone else takes the ball..

Now you’ve ruined my image of you as the ace coder! But confession is good for the soul, and you’re still an ace! Seriously, when even IE6 works fine, the process itself can’t be that bad. After reading Susan’s links, the case for IE7 being sucky for uploading gains credibility.

Now I swear at Microsoft at least once a day, as any CSS person does, it’s part of my job description. But even I have to admit that IE7 seems to be better at a fair number of things. But it’s almost never worse than IE6 - until now! And wait, if you call our operators in the next ten minutes, you’ll get free browser tabs at NO EXTRA CHARGE!
