Thumbnail shadow on black background

Does anybody have advice on how to get a good looking shadow on a black page background?
I tried changing thumb_shadow_bgcolor=`000000` but this just has the effect of an invisible shadow. Do I need to change the PNGs in /maxigallery/dropshadow, and if so, does anybody have some they could send me?

If your background is truly black (which is also #000000) you’ll never be able to reproduce something that’s blacker-than-black. You’ll need to lighten your bg in order for it to show up.

Or make the shadow a grey color.

But then it looks like a glow!

Not necessarily; if it’s the right shade of grey it looks ok.

Very true... Apple pulls that off regularly.

Yes, I realise I’m not going to get blacker than #000000 .
The glow / soft edges effect was what I was after - has anybody done that before?

OK, I stopped being lazy and played with the images myself. (I just loaded them into Photoshop and hit Ctrl + I to invert).

The result isn’t too bad:
