Thumbnail Generation

I’m assuming MODx uses a function to automatically generate thumbnails of images that are uploaded. I’d like to use these in an image gallery. Is this possible? How would I select a thumbnail versus the original image? Also, is there a file I can use to configure thumbnails (i.e. dimensions, compression, etc.)?

I am aware of the handful of available gallery snippets, but none suit my needs. I’ve also read through descriptions for a couple of the available thumbnail plugins (e.g. phpThumb) but these seem to be designed to produce thumbnails of images already included within a document. What I’d like is to create global management of thumbnail images. Not sure that this is possible...
