in this snippet example and others like it, where is the ID ?
    [[MenuSnippet?id=`0`&activelink=`active`]]

in manager when you have folders or pages it displays name followed by a number (7) what does the # indicate?

    is this the ID ?

also in the example above menusnippet is this the name of the snippet or another way to say dropmenu

MenuSnippet in your example refers to a snippet which is called that way. The Stuff after the ? are parameters. You can have a look into the snippets source in the manager for their meaning.

I think in this case the snippet is kind of a menu. Im not sure what id does mean in that context or what snippet this is, though.

Normaly the parameter id in the modx-links (like index.php?id=23) refers to the page with number 23. This is the same number which is aside the name of the page in the manager.

i see, so how would we set up a snippet for top navigation, main navigation, footer navigation each with separate folders would the name of the snippet be the name of the folder ?

menus are very confusing in modx, would be cool just to have insert menu tag "menu/folder name" then put it anywhere you want it in the html.

Well, the menu-snippet is pretty much the same as the one you are using right now. The difference is in the css file which you can find
          in assets/templates/<NameOfYourTemplate>/*.css on your server.
Maybe you should get a little familiar with css to change this, or look around at other templates css-files in the css-section.

The name of the snippet stays ALWAYS the same. You will never change it.

Basically, the snippet works that way:
It searches all the pages you created (and you have published), and generates a link for each of them. The ones in a folder are submenu-items, the pages at root are the top-elements of your menu. Look at the source of your page in your browser. The <li></li> items between <ul> and </ul> which are links are the ones of the menu.

Maybe I suggest you try to create several pages and subfolders at your basic installation and get a little familiar with the way pages and folders are created. Then we should talk about getting an other template. But this isn’t that difficult if you have found a template you like.

I’m not sure how this is meant? You basically don’t play around with the html in modx...

styling the navigation is not the trouble i’m having, understanding how to setup menus is

I wasn’t using that snipppet example, i was only trying to undersand how to use snippets,

do we create a menu snippet ? or can we just use the one dropmenu snippet for all of our navigation systems

it sounds like the dropmenu tag you just insert it and it pulls in the menu from what I can see in the default example
now if you have 3 or 4 different navigation system each with differeng set of pages(links) would we still use the same dropmenu tag or have to rename ? that’s the confusing part smiley

Yes, you can use the dropmenu to basically to do multiple naviagtion menu like a topbar menu and a related siderbar menu. You can even use DropMenu to display relational link within your content section. Navigational menu is built starting at somepoint, if none specified default to starting at the root level on your site tree.

3 or 4 different navigation system each with differeng set of pages(links)

For the different navigational system that you require, you can use the dropmenu snippet but specify the starting point of that particular section. In DropMenu this is achieved by passing the "startDoc" value. The different lookNfeel and behaviour can be set using different CSS settings.

                so if i’m understanding correctly

i have a menu folder that contains the pages for menu set #1
the starting page of the menu folder is id 10 ie navmenu (10)

the tag would look like this to call that menu set ?

                [[DropMenu? &startDoc=`10` &levelLimit=`1`]]

I tried this and no menus appeared

                  [[DropMenu? &startDoc=`10` &levelLimit=`1`]]

Thats right assuming you also have document child/children within doc 10.
DropMenu snippet in its original form should display a result - does for me.

got it working finally feels like driving a car for the first time grin

I notice the dropmenu does menus like <li> my orginal menu was not made like that but more like this

menuone | menutwo | menuthree | but it’s made instead to be in bullet form

is there a way to bypass dropmenu’s bullet format ?

You can use CSS to do that. Look for "ordered list styling css" in google, and you will a lot of tutorial explaining that.
