Err...when it comes to hosting providers, one motto I’ve always found to be true is this:

"If it sounds too good to be true...then it probably is."

Definitely cool that a hosting provider is offering a MODx installation. But 12 gigs and 500 gigs of bandwidth a month? Umm...I doubt it. They probably oversell the hell out of the space on their servers if that’s the case.

Good hosting at $5 a month isn’t so unheard of... (the $5 a month is if you pay 1yr in advance = $60)
I’ll maybe have a look, my first attempt at a live install on my current free host was a bust.
They are sometimes idiot’s, who don’t care what you can install or run, or if you can install or run anything.
Oh yeah at $5 bucks a month I was only getting ticket support, and they don’t answer any questions concerning setup.
So maybe you do get what you pay for, good point...

More about the host scotty found... for $8 bucks a month you get a whole lot more option including .NET, nobody around here would care about, but it’s nice to have options. And they have a publically available forum.
My host hides their forum’s because they are afraid of competition, don’t tell em I said that wink

They are using the Plesk control panel, I been checking out that C-panel a little bit... anybody use it? like it?

I really need a host w/ a large group of developer’s on board, to answer stupid questions, you guy’s are all great, but the hosting huh makes it hard for anybody to even attempt to help me out.

Definition of a stupid question, one you don’t know the answer too.
There are no stupid anwers then really.... unless it’s a wrong answer, which in programming would be entirely too possible.

Would a real MODx hosting solution interest you...

                • built on top of killer hardware (dual core P4s @ 3GHz with 2-4GB RAM and hardware drive mirroring)
                • on top of a 5-9s bandwidth SLA
                • allows you to resell your services to clients and install Plesk (with a master agreement from Southwest Soft) at your discretion and for minimal or no cost to you
                • PHP 5.1.x and MySQL 4.1.x or 5.0.x
                • uses virtualized and tiered hardware resources
                • can be easily migrated to more resources as your requirements grow
                • available load balanced virtual or dedicated web servers and database servers
                • available fully managed MODx deployments including proactive security and feature-upgrade updates
                • available, supported and proactively maintained open source software stacks (LAMP)
                • maintain multiple subscriptions each with different billing preferences under a single master account

Granted, this hosting platform would not be for the raw newbie-level user. This is truly professional hosting on a premium platform and offers guaranteed resources and performance ... enterprise-level (but not enterprise pricing, either). It’s certainly not going to be priced to compete with commodity hosting providers, either (don’t expect anything below $40 per month). But for people that are looking for a rock solid hosting on guaranteed resources this will be an incredible solution. This is for a business, person or organization that truly doesn’t want to have to worry about their hosting, or to take chances.

I think he means me sad I didn’t get my install running so I’m not a user per se.

Is Apache really the way to go then, I’ve been seeing Plesk around alot too, looks like it’ld be great for setting up sub-user’s to an account maybe.

I need more details on file permission’s for the whole application, and maybe I could get my install off the ground (typical IIS gar-bage’)... (off topic smiley

tzmedia, I suspect that if you had been trying for all these days on a non-IIS server, you’d be on your second or third site by now, and you still have yet to get to the friendly URLs part.

The 2 major panels are Plesk and CPanel.

At one time Plesk was simple yet pokey and would trudge along in speed.
CPanel was much quicker and had oodles to play with and install.

However this information is 2 years old.

You can also go webmini if it’s still out there ... not pretty but robust and does a good job.

For the *panels either does the job and most hosting services provides one. I’d hate to run a server without at least webmini running.

Hosting is an eeirie issue. Although, Ryan’s setup sounds a bit expensive you can always remember that he’s staking more on you being his customer than if you go with some server farm.

I lease my own machine from perl gurus that I knew back from my perl days. They too are more expensive but there is nothing like emails that are personal (no support desk manuals to deal with) and relatively quick service. Hey I live on the other side of the world so a delay of a day or 2 is just a fact of life.
