I’ve used paypal. They dont have a slick cart like foxy or google. So your client has a few choices

    1. regular paypal cart. cheap, ugly, and not flashy
    2. foxycart. $30/mo, very slick and very flashy
    3. buggy treasurechest, some non-modx solution, or a custom one - costs money.

there is no cheap and flashy way to do ecommerce. ecommerce right is hard (ie costs)

If it is an intensive eCommerce website, you should try Magento...
if it is a small amount of products, foxycart or treasurechest are the answer

Found this FREEWAY http://www.openfreeway.org/home/features.html - seemed to support many more payment gateways than just simply 1-3 like other cart systems. Suits Australian based developers there are lots of options that are missing from other sites if you use a banking payment gateway. Seems quite customisable, so i think it could integrate fairly well with MODx with a bit of tweaking, though i haven’t tried it myself... I ended up getting some programming done to create a a shopfront based on my criteria so i never got the chance.

Thought i would post it here incase someone else was looking into it. There doesn’t seem to be many out of the box options for non-developers. This one i think you would at least some grasp on it.

        From the horse’s mouth:
Freeway is by far the largest and most fully featured Open Source eCommerce platform. It doesn’t just sell products but extends to sell in some very fancy new ways and is very configurable. For example, you can just sell products if you are not interested in the other selling methods.

You will find Freeway has very strong CRM features as well as a useful and simple CMS as well.
