Site very slow

I’m new to MODx.
I’m using PowWeb as my host, and I am converting my site from FrontPage to MODx.
I’m noticing that the pages of the MODx site are served to visitors *much* slower than with the FrontPage-based site. The home page of the FP site comes up almost instantaneously, whereas it takes some 10 to 12 seconds for the home page to appear on the MODx site, and even after that it takes about 5 seconds to load any new pages in the site. Is there anything I can do at my end to speed up the MODx site, or is this most likely an issue with the host?

It frankly looks like a server issue to me. Both are equally slow on my ADSL from the central U.S.

The server is not terribly responsive (my browser wait was "waiting for the server to reply" according to the status bar).

I suspect the FP version seems so much faster to you because you have all the images cached already. The html of both pages loads pretty fast...the wait is for images.

Once the images have been cached, both load pretty quickly, btw.

I also got both pages about the same amount of time from my crummy Israeli DSL connection. According to my (admittedly not 100% accurate one-thousand-one, one-thousand-two method of timing) count they both took about 10 seconds to load. If anything, the MODx was maybe a second faster. And it was the images that took up the vast majority of the time.

The FP version seemed to be slower than the MODx version. On first load it took a very long time for the FP version to load the images of the tabs. After visiting the whole FP site it seems to be faster than the MODx version, probably due to caching of the browser. BTW tried it with FF.
