ajaxSearch 1.7.1 upgrade - go button grayed and inactive

in the course of various other changes i’ve just upgradedede ajaxSearch from 1.1>1.7.1

With various standard snippet calls set up (including the most basic) both the search box and go button do appear in the newly templated pages, but search is inoperable and the go button is grayed.

I had ony have vAS 1.1 running briefly and ended up upgrading AS inadvertently when I had to various bits of general reinstallation.
Have checked files locations case sensitivite names, repaced the snippet etc, and killed all 1.1 residue (I think)


ANy ideas anyone? I really feel like I’ve tried everything. Thanks
