If you look in your CSS file, you may find some display definitions for either span or the error class that are making it display like that. FireBug would be very helpful in finding out what CSS is affecting them.

You’re right, my css does style "error" classes. I changed my CSS.
As an aside, is there a way to change the errTpl, or is this too dangerous as I’d also have to amend the php in the Formit snippet.

You don’t ever want to change the Tpl chunks or code that come with a component, but you can substitute your own with the errTpl parameter as Cipa suggests.
