I have been hunting and hunting for a CMS that looked good and was (relatively) easy to use. I think I’ve found what I’m looking for in MODx. Thanks everyone!

In saying that, there are two small questions I have. (Let me apologise in advance if I sound like an idiot.) rolleyes

    1. I’m running Mac OS 10.4.5 and I noticed that on the MODx webpage (just above where I’m typing, in fact) are all the icons for bold, italics, tables, etc. But I can’t figure out how to make this appear on my own infant MODx site. Instead, I get ... well, nothing. I’d have to type it all using HTML. Could someone explain how I can do this?

    2. On the MODx website there’s a calendar (awesome!). Is this an extra resource I need to download and if so, where can I find it? I noticed there was a beta version in the forums (See? I DID do my homework!) but there’s a warning from the creator that it’s still under development and shouldn’t really be used.

Again, my apologies for sounding like a numpty (great Scottish word).

First rule here is : there are no stupid questions, just questions, plus it can help others who would have the same Qs

Well, I think you are confusing MODx and SMF (the forum module which is powering this forum), which is understandable since Zi did such a nice work of integrating the main website (modxcms.com, MODx powered) with the forums (SMF powered). The toolbar you see when you edit post is SMF’s standard formatting toolbar.

But don’t worry, MODx let you choose between several editors :
      - FCK Editor (bundled with MODx)
      - Xinha (plugin)
      - TinyMCE (plugin)
but also if you’d rather use a short and easy syntax
      - BBCode (a plugin that let you use a syntax just like the one used on this forum)
      - Textile (plugin)
      - Markdown (plugin)

If you wonder where to get those, check this page :

It’s SMF calendar, not MODx that you see on the boards here.
This being said, MODx also has a nice Calendar snipppet thanks to Wendy smiley

I hope this helps clarifying things smiley

      Welcome onboard !

Wow. Un réponse trés vite! Merci! (A quick answer! Thanks)

I think my difficulty is because I really am a ’newbie’. I’m struggling to find information about how to import resources in general. I downloaded some templates but don’t know how to import them. Similar difficulties with text editors. I was also really impressed with how you could quote parts of my text. How’d you do that? laugh

I’m really impressed with how MODx works - really, I am! And while I appreciate that it’s perhaps easier to put instructions/information on the website, I have to admit I’d kill for an in-depth PDF document.

Quoting is done from the "quote" link in the upper right of every message. As David mentioned, don’t confuse MODx with SMF (Simple Machines Forum)! They are two different applications.

You have a Mac; so go to the documentation and from your browser do File->Print->Save As PDF. I do that all the time. I used to have cartons of knitting and crochet patterns, now I have cartons of documentation printout for everything from compiling Apache to making egg tempura paint. And more cartons of knitting and crochet patterns. Gotta love the Internet!

            Goodness, don’t get those confused!

Thanks for the input. I guess it’s a high learning curve for someone who is still pretty new to CSS/php/mysql/etc. There’s only so much I can take in before my brain starts to ooze out of my ears!

I’m still struggling to understand how to install a module. I hate it when I can’t do something. :’(

But I’m very glad for all your support. Thanks. smiley

I’m having a ball with this, for a girl who was refused a computer kit as a teenager because "it isn’t for girls" ditto later as a wife, and having been told by one computer shop owner to "go knit booties for your grandchildren", which I had already done the evening before! (the same guy later wanted to hire me to teach in a computer lab he was starting up, and bought a quilt I had made)

I just downloaded phpAjaxTags and am almost ready to demo a module I’m building using them. Great stuff! As soon as I get my head really wrapped around what I’m doing, instead of just stumbling into something that works, I’ll write up some tutorials on using it.

Remind me to continue to pick your brains, then. smiley

As someone who teaches at a University, I’m always encouraging people to try new things and not to assume that you can’t do something just because someone says you can’t. Too bad you’re not in Scotland; I’d have you lecturing and showing these kids that learning is for life.

So, after those kind comments, any chance you could help me figure out how I get these downloaded templates installed? shocked

To what templates are you referring? Most of them have installation instructions in the packaged archive.

Basically, you just go to Manage Resources in Manager, and in the Templates tag choose New template, then copy/paste the HTML code. Replace content with MODx snippet, TV and chunk tags. Upload the folder containing the css files and images to the assets/templates folder and adjust any links in the head of the template to point to it.

There is no automatic installer yet, I imagine because it’s so easy to do that it really hasn’t been a serious priority issue with anybody.

I can adapt any webpage on the Internet in just a few minutes.

With all the templates, modules, snippets, and resources, at present you have to copy & paste the data into the manager, there is currently no importing directly from the manager, work in progress.
                    for example with the templates,

                    1. there is usually a .tpl or .html file that contains the template code, you could open these files up with a text editor (such as notepad), use CTRL-A to select all the text, CTRL-C to copy
                    2. Log into MODx manager, Select Resources -> Manage Resources -> Templates -> Create new template
                    3. Name the template and CTRL-V to paste the code for the template.

I think the pdf documentation is being worked on, there is a thread on the forums about this.

if you are looking or the formatting buttons ( FCK editor ) in the content pages in safari .. you wont see them .. dont think FCK works on safari yet .. best answer? download firefox or camino to do your editing with!
