If I enable PHx I cannot use the [+validationmessage+] placeholder outside the tpl chunk (&tpl). Inside the tpl it works.

Yes, PHx plugin eats placeholders. You’ll have to either uncache your page (in the resource’s Settings tab) or use a wrapper snippet to return the placeholder’s value:
return $modx->getPlaceholder['validationmessage'];
Calling the snippet cached and unchecking the caching in document settings did it. Thanks.
