I’ve been trying to find a simple, easy-to-incorporate product catalog. No cart functionality needed: actually, an image gallery would almost fill the bill, except that I’d like to have more information displayed easily.
The listings displayed here almost fill the bill...except that they come from a CGI program that I’ve been having a rough time trying to integrate with MODx.

Solving a plain catalog listing in MODx is really simple. All you need to do is make every item to be on personal page. Use Newslisting to accomplish the job for displaying all sub docs (that you will assume as items) to be listed properly with your defined template as well.

If you need additional fields for each item, you can just use Template Variables and assign it to the right template and voila, you get this additional field in the manager itself which you can fill in and displayed on the item listing or item detailed view.

Hope it gives you something to start working on your project grin

Wow...if I’m understanding you right, this is incredible.
You’re saying I can make a data field (say, dimensions, other pictures, etc) with a TV, assign it to the template I’m using for the catalog, and then populate it in each document?
        Incredible.

          Definetely!
That’s the power of MODx. Now you’ll be more amaze, when you know each TV can use BINDING. So let say, youo have a TV, and you want to run a simple PHP script to output the result, so you @EVAL and follow by any php code that you want. If you want to have database data to be displayed on TV, you can use @SELECT, and bla bla bla, for more information check this out http://modxcms.com/data-binding.html

Other than that, each TV input can be formated in certain way for it to be outputed/displayed in a nicely format. For example, we have data grid widget, so if we use @SELECT binding to fetch data from database, it can automatically being outputed in a nicely table layout. More on this you should read documentation thoroughly wink

Have fun with the POWER of MODx. grin

            Wow...this is great.
Next question: is it possible to give each document several "tags" or "labels," and then filter by those labels, instead of making a hierarchical structure?

Sure, you can use newlisting snippet with &filter=tvtemplatevariablename to filter your catalogs.
You can use a tv to assign a category and call with newslisting only products in this category.
Take a look here http://www.tattoocms.it/templates.html for a very simple example.

Sure you can, in fact you can still arange them hierarchical for you to easily manage the list, while for the front end, you can use newslisting to list all documents, including sub docs, and filter the display to certain TV value.

For more of this, you can ask our newslisting author, Mark. He is the right man for you ta talk to.

                  hello,
I am new here and I have found this thread useful but I couldn’t find anything about Newslisting out there. Was that deprecated or something? Is another way of doing this now?
                  Thanks!
