Oh yeah, and for a few more spots to change (the downfall of this approach) -
change your login.html style forms to show with the adjust code as well. Just thought I’d sniff out the changes for ya.
Just a note: CAPTCHA is now an optional plugin for MODx Revolution. Both the option to use a math equation for the image and the selection of CAPTCHA words can be set in System Settings in the Manager. The captcha.php file in /assets/captcha can also be used directly as an image src by other add-ons that want a captcha image. They can check the user’s input against the $_SESSION variable set by the VeriWord class through captcha.php.
Because it’s no longer part of the core, you can also feel free to rewrite captcha.php, veriword.class.php, mathstring.class.php, and/or the plugin to do what you want without them being overwritten when you upgrade MODx.
I installed this better captcha display, logged out, and attempted to log back in... after three attempts, I got locked out of my admin account. I must not of had something in the code set up correctly I guess. Or maybe this doesn’t work with newer versions of modx? Anyone have any ideas why this captcha system won’t work for me, but the captcha system that comes with modx does work? I’m just going to go back to the original captcha display. I ended up having to go into my database and reset some things in order to get back into my account.
I don’t know anything about this particular implementation. But you’ll find that Recaptcha has been enabled and that Bob Ray has I think an improved veriword captcha in SPform. (I got Recaptcha implemented in both eform and spform, fwiw).

Most likely what you did wrong was a mismatch between the name of the session variable that is saved when the CAPTCHA image is created and the one that’s checked by the validation code.
I’m using 1.0.2 so that’s probably the issue.
