    must be missing something . . . new install of 0.9.6 and fckeditor 2.4.3 . . . from the instructions:

    * Download and unzip the plugin files.
    ok
    * Upload the corresponding files to the root of your MODx site.
    uploaded the contents of ’/editor/’ folder to domain/modx/assets/plugins/fckeditor243
    * Run the installer (http://www.yoursite.com/install/).
    went to installer. used ’upgrade existing install’ - no sign of fckeditor in install
    * Select FCKEditor from the list of editors in the MODx configuration (System Configuration / Interface & Editor Settings).
    does not show up (not a surprise!)

    am thinking i am missing something obvious. or do i need to setup the plugin manually in manager?

    this newb appreciates you help . . . and am very impressed with modx so far.
    • I believe this add-on comes with it’s own installer which would need to be uploaded as well. Sounds like you were running the original MODx installer... huh

        so, the installer would be a file that comes with the fckeditor .zip file?

          i know, i know, perhaps designers should stick with designing . . . but after some head scratching i made sense of opengeek’s comment. perhaps this might help other developer wannabes *s*

          the installer is specific to fckeditor. it comes packaged with the download from this site . . . and does not come with the plugin downloaded from the fckeditor home site (which i was using). the second part, is that you need to upload the install folder (from the modx download) to the root of your modx install. the default install folder is not a universal installing tool and needs to be removed after initial installation. then go to /install and voila, it is installed.

          thank you opengeek!

            Thank you guys!
            I’m completely new with MODx but fairly OK with software in general.
            Re-running the MODx install felt like a weird advice, but hey, I’m a newby.
            Perhaps a nice idea to add this little info to: http://modxcms.com/FCKEditor-583.html??

              chas, I have to say that confused me. It should read the install folder from the "MODx FCKeditor download", not the MODx download. That implies it should be from the MODx 0.9.6.1p2 download, which I, as a newbie dummie, did with no joy.

              OK, the FCKEditor shouted "install successful!" after I figured this out, the culmination of a nice chunk of time navigating through the entire "gotcha" journey.

              Now whether I choose FCKeditor or TinyMCE in the Tools/Configuration window on the Manager page, I get lots of warning alerts.

              Pardon the long quote:
              Warning: include_once(/home/donschae/www/www/modx/assets/plugins/fckeditor261/fckeditor.lang.php) [function.include-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/donschae/www/www/modx/manager/includes/document.parser.class.inc.php(745) : eval()’d code on line 17

              The same error is reported from Resources/Manage Resources.

              So what do I do now? Call my therapist for an hour chat, forget CMS and watch TV, install WordPress?

                I think the installation instructions for FCK Editor are a bit unclear. Here’s how I installed it:

                1- Download the zip file and extract all files to your harddrive (I find the desktop a good place);
                2- You’ll now have a folder called "FCKEditor_2.6b";
                3- Look inside this folder to find two folders: "assets" and "install";
                4- Copy the whole "install" folder to your site’s root folder (if you have the original MODx install folder still there, you need to temporarily rename that);
                5- Now open the "assets" folder inside the "FCKEditor_2.6b" folder;
                6- You’ll find a "plugins" folder in there. Open it;
                7- There’s a "fckeditor26b" folder inside;
                8- Copy this "fckeditor26b" folder and paste it in the "assets>plugins" folder of your MODx site (notice there is already a "tinymce212" folder in there);
                9- Now run the installer (http://www.yoursite.com/install/).

                Done, you should now be able to select FCK Editor from the list of editors.

                I hope this helps someone... It took me a while to figure it out smiley

                    In case you download fckeditor from their website fckeditor.net, it does not have the folder "install" when you extract the files to root folder.fckeditor 2.6.2 zip file that is downloadable from this site does have the install folder. In case when the files extracted have a install folder there is no problem. the problem arises only when one does not have install folder extracted from the zip file.
                    a lot of users of modx are facing such problems when they download it from fckeditor.net.
                    In such a situation the remedy is go to Resources/manage resources/plugin==> add new plug in . and one requires a code to enter it in plugin(php) window.If one gets the code it may work without need to install .
                    I am not sure whether it is ok.
