    Hi

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to install directly into a sub folder of web root directory. eg extract the tar file to:

    /my_second_install

so that i end up with

    /my_second_install/install
    /my_second_install/assets
    /my_second_install/manager

and then run the normal install.

When I try to run the install it says that the config.inc.php is available and chmod’d to 777 but I haven’t yet created one! think it must be detecting my previously install instance of modx which I installed in the root folder.

Please help as I want to run multiple sites off my one hosting account and I’m at a loss.

      Hi en8scl,

Should be okay, I’m running multiple installs on my hosted account.

Are you running friendly urls on your primary site? You will need to make sure that you enable the .htaccess file in your second install folder if you are.

      Hope that helps, Garry

I have tried enable the ht.access file by renaming it .htaccess but this causes the web server to return an internal error. Its running on PHP 4.3.10.

I’m affraid i’m probably going to need more detailed instructions on what needs to be done before running the install program in the sub folder - scared it is going to overwrite the primary installation config files.

As far as my undestanding goes, you won’t be able to install 2 MODx installation on the same directory. If you’re installing it on subfolder, than it’s possible, all you need to do is copy and paste it to the subfolder, that’s all.

Would you minds trying to clear all the files/fodlers inside the subfolder and reupload all the files to it? Make sure that the config.inc.php on the manager/includes/ folder. You also need to make sure that you’ve given write access to the inludes folder. The best thing to do will be to create the config.inc.php file manually as an empty text file, and upload it to the server, and give write access to it.

          Hope this solve the problem.

          Sincerely,

Does this mean that for each new installation I need to install it in the root folder before moving all files to a sub-directory to prevent the install overwriting the previous config.inc.php ? Will this make installing updates to each instance a head ache in the future?

              Ehmm.. Nope
You need to upload all the original files from the MODx official release pacakage onto the subdirectory directly, which means it sill have the install folder on it. Then run the installation as usual. One thing to note, don’t change the ht.access file yet into .htaccess. maybe this is one of the cause to your problem.
