I used to create custom plugins to do this sort of thing. However, I have found that
ManagerManager is a much easier solution. Depending on what you’re trying to achieve, you could create either a custom function or custom widget to do what you want to do. Both allow you to use jQuery to manipulate the elements and you can even throw in some PHP scripts to handle the MODx related bits.

Jeff, do you care to elaborate a little more, I am also writing plugins to change one multiselect
TV based on the behavior of another and seems that we are going thru the same paths that you more
experienced MODx-ers went thru a while ago.
I have used MM to hide fields, tabs, etc., move fields, set defaults...
where can I find info that explains how we "could create either a custom function or custom widget
to do what you want to do"...
I am not yet up to jQuery, but getting there fast...
