Alternative icons in document tree to represent different templates

I have multiple templates that i would like to represent as different icons in the document tree, as I want the site editor to visually understand the site structure better.

For example i would like the Home template to have a custom "Home" icon instead of the default theme icon. Or a Feed template can be represented by a "feed" icon.

Is there an easy way to do this without hacking the code or DB? Or is it using the Manager theme (style.php)?

Unfortunately not right now but that’s an interesting idea (associating a custom icon with each template type). Please file a feature request in our JIRA tracker. Thanks!
