Dont know lot about it,
but make sure you selected the right content type (mime-type) "text/xml" , and the "Blank Template" inside the template drop down list.

hmmm, sorry to say that we haven’t tested MODx with PHP 5.1 yet.
I think the problem here is that the document you are trying to save as XML must have a valid XML header. Are you putting any valid XML contents into the document before saving it?

right, because when you send the xml content type to the browser, it expects a well formed XML document
