Selecting user groups from edit profile page in 1.3.1

Trying to set up the ability for web users to select which web groups they are part of from their edit profile page. Found a solution here:

Doesn’t seem to work with 1.3.1. Anyone got it working with the current version?

EDIT: tried it on a 1.3.0 install as well. No dice.

I’m looking for something similar, but its so that an admin can choose the user’s group.
