OK, I’ve played with WebLogin PE, but haven’t truly got my head around it yet.

I will do soon, just haven’t had long enough to test but anyway, how possible is creating a "friend" function? (add a friend, remove a friend, see my friends etc) I’m sure this has been asked before but can’t find any old posts mentioning it. I’m pretty adept at hacking away at snippets, but want to know whether this is at all possible/has been done before I get started.

Also, creating some sort of news feed on people’s activity: "Saul has just posted a video" and "Saul has just commented on Dave’s video" sort of things, any idea’s how this could be done? Could I force jot to write to an event log somewhere?

Also, we’re thinking about having a quick register form ala vimeo where you just need your email and password, then you add your details in later, assuming this is possible, but just checking.

Should I even be using webLogin PE to do this? I’m certainly going to be stretching what modx can do in some ways, so has anyone integrated any social networking code (elgg and the like) into modx at all?

    Cheers

As far is I know, this could be acomplished easily. Just create a "&registerTpl"-chunk, where you just specify email, username and password. Next time the new user logs in you could present him a link to the profile editing page.

There is a session bridge between modx and smf forum. Its possible to make snippets that grabs functions from the forum
and use ’em inside modx! cool

        Havent started playing myself yet.

Friend should be able to be done using the custom profile functionality.

As for the status, I dunno. Might be best to use Jot like you said.

cool thanks for the info so far guys. I think I’m going to try to keep it in modx, integrating with smf might be a bit overkill as I don’t want any forum functionality.

So this is how I imagine I’d do the friend list in webloginPE: A custom field called friends, which is just a list of people’s usernames (then exploded in php, and given a relevant link to each profile). As for adding friends, you view someone’s profile, click the new "add to friend list button" which then appends their name to your "friends" field in the db. I guess at this point I could also send a mail to the user, saying "X has just added you as a friend, click here to see their profile blah blah". As for removing friends, guess I’d have to build a "is this username allready in the friends field" check before the button is created. Think that covers basic functionality. Anything I’m missing that might not be possible with the way weblogin works?

I don’tt think webloginpe is the right snippet to incorporate friends lists and the like. Webloginpe is mainly for authenticating, registering and managing web users. Adding social networking functions to it is just going to make it unnecessarily bulky. Friends lists and other social networking functions can easily be done in their own snippets.
