is it possible in some way to have a private messaging system in the front for web users?
I've done several for various projects and it fairly straight forward, would make sense to create an actual extra for this. There have been rumors of potentially removing that feature for the core build, not sure what its status is at this time. The major considerations on the messaging is that the sent would have to be built or extend the current, as it only creates the message to the recipient. That I usually tagged as un-read so that the sender knows when the message was opened, but again they have no historical log with core builds messaging.

looks like in package management there are addons called messages, and personalmessages. yet to dig into them, though looks like limited documentation on it. yet to find a actual url with info, just the little bit inside of the package management. It took searching through the entire package management to find them.
All working uses are private behind authenticated sections of sites, since it's tied to users. I'd be more than happy to work it into an official extra. What's your timeline or deadline?
The UI on it uses jQuery tabs, so it's easy to customize through standard jQuery UI Tabs styles.

currently trying out the extra PersonalMessages but having issues making that work... the creator of the extra, msged me some more info on how to use it so still need to give that a try. was also going to give the extra networkit i listed above a try as well if that PersonalMessages fails to work for me. I'm creating a dating website, so need some way for users to privately message each other. my soft deadline is xmas.
ping me in the next week or so if you are still having issues, then we can see what we can do to get you a solid resolution.
Cheers
