Jason : very interresting post !

I wouldn’t be able to discuss this on the technical "code" side of things.

This being said, I think the NewsListing snippet has a huge potential. I say this with a good knowledge of what WordPress, Textpattern, Nucleus or Expression Engine can do. While it sures lack some feature (but that will change), it’s incredibly powerful and gives you a lot of freedom when you want to customize your blog "the next step". I have no doubt a snippet will handle trackback, the UserComments snippet will get better, safer and richer feature wise. The user synchronisation with SMF is already a pretty nice feature demonstrating the real power of a framework such as MODx. The things you say with your WP experience certainly confirms this....

For this reason, I think MODx could become a hot tool for power bloggers such as John Hicks or the like grin
This being said, more casual blogger will definitely enjoy having WP, Nucleus or any blogging system integrated into MODx. The whole logic behind MODx makes this easier than it is with mere CMS, another example of the framework’s power. That’s why I also have no doubt this will happen sooner than later.

But personnally, I think in a few months, most will choose to go with a NewsListing/UserComments/Trackback combo rather than use an integration... flexibility is priceless grin

Since this post is now 2 years old now...
wondering what/any advances have been made for wordpress integration or an equivalent blog with modx. This is one of the areas that has had me dragging my feet with going with modx.
Have been using Thingamablog for blogging, which is good when it works but has a record of loosing archived categories and entries among other things. Have been looking to replace it with Wordpress or a blog add-on to modx.
I want a CMS system that allows full member integration (from blogging to their own pages, to classifieds, etc.) where users don’t have to login multiple times for different member components of the site. If this is not doable in the foreseeable future with modx, is there a CMS that can that is equivalent to it or better that is open source?

You can easily build blogs right in MODx. There is an example in the "sample site" that is available during the install process and there are a few other examples (some a bit out dated though).

Wordpress integration to me seems redundant. If you are planning to use a blog as a business tool and build a revenue stream on the content you should use WordPress. It is still a stellar blog platform and is well suited to just that--blogging. If you just want to display content in a blog format but don’t need the advanced functions of Wordpress, then MODx will do wonderfully.

As I have learned over my time with MODx, some projects require different tools. My wife’s blog is built on WP but her site is built on MODx. She uses many of the advanced features/plugins of Wordpress.
