Can sign in (as manager) a few times, then it tells me "The security code you entered didn’t validate!" when I know it was correct (and eventually, of course, I get locked out).

    How to fix?

    MODx Evo (latest), clean install.

    Thanks!

It sounds like you have CAPTCHA turned on. One solution is to turn it off.

CAPTCHA saves the correct validation code in a $_SESSION variable for later comparison. When youre validation fails, the $_SESSION variable is probably empty at the time of the comparision.

The most likely source of your problem is a shared hosting service doing aggressive garbage collection and wiping out the $_SESSION data a little too often.

BTW, you can change the System Setting for how long you’re blocked and also the one for number of failed attempts before being blocked.

Thanks! Interestingly, I turned captcha off, and went into db and (many times) removed block, failedlogin, blockeduntil - no luck. Also checked all usernames and passwords, but the "security code..." issue was the one reported. Captcha even stopped being turned off - and never could get into manager to turn it off there.

Something is not right, and it has been getting worse, so not sure of alternative. Reinstall, I think, but just worried about not remembering where all the old files are (new site, lots of work but didn’t back up all site files -same old story: "just one more page....") Live and learn!

I am not the person to do it (yet) but it would be great to elaborate upon (as in, a "for Dummies" version) the upgrade and the install wiki. There are a lot of steps (files to replace, files to NOT replace, what the config file does, etc) that are just assumed. Although I don’t mean to complain! I know a lot of work went into it, and hope someday I "get" things enough to contribute, too.

You should be able to edit the assets/cache/siteCache.idx.php file to turn CAPTCHA off (remember to turn it off in the manager in Tools | Configuration too once you get in or it will come back).

Othersise, you can also use PhpMyAdmin and edit the system_settings table. I think you set use_captcha to 0. It should be obvious when you find it. If you do this, clear the assets/cache folder except for index.php and clear your browser cache/cookies before testing.

BTW, A careful upgrade install with all the add-on options unchecked shouldn’t affect your own content at all and is worth a try.
