Okay, I’ve been through the archives and the closest thing I can come up with as an answer to this is ManagerLogin snippet. But I’m not certain that is what I need. So, here the situation :

I have a document that is published and assigned to a specific resource group.
I have a manager user that has limited privileges (e.g. can do general things and create content).
I have assigned this user to a user group and linked the user group to the above resource group.

Now I would have thought that if this user logged in via the manager and then previewed the site, they would see then menu entry, while anyone hitting the site from the web would not see it.

That doesn’t seem to be the case - it would seem that the entry just won’t show up.

If anyone can point out what I’m either doing wrong or not appreciating about how user permissions are implemented, I’d be grateful So too would it be good to hear of ways others have dealt with this. (BTW, the root cause for this approach is that the site owner would rather not have a login option on the site.)

I think you are mixing Web users with Manager Users.

Web users are only for the frontend of the website.
Manager Users are only for the manager.

        Probably smiley

I guess what occurs to me is that there are really three different "users" for a CMS - the person visiting the web site (a.k.a. the web user), the administrator of the site (a.k.a. the manager user/techie behind the scenes) and - possibly - a content adminisitrator, someone sort of between the two in terms of responsibilities and capabilities. This user might not have the programming/design skills of the "manager" user, but they may be charged with managing content - adding, editing, deleting the contents of elements while having no discretion when it comes to other changes on a site.

Some combo of permissions and user group-specific settings may get me close to what I’m thinking about. But I haven’t hit on the solution yet ...

        Thanks for thinking about this.

no, you’re right...it’s kind of a "bug", see this thread: http://modxcms.com/forums/index.php/topic,37693.msg234157.html

Remember that Web Users are only Web Users after they log in in the front end. So the three kinds of users are really:

Unlogged-in visitors - who have no rights to restricted documents in the front end or to the Manager
Web Users (who may each have different rights for documents in the front end)
Manager Users (who may each have different rights to documents in the back end)

            More info here: http://www.bobsguides.com/permissions.html

Tip: If you want to see the site as a visitor or Web User does, always use a different browser than the one where you are logged in as a Manager.

Point well taken. I think one of the ways I’ve been getting myself confused is that I have been doing development and previewing on the same machine. And being reluctant to having IE running alongside Firefox (actually, being resistant to running it at all, just on general principle) I’ve been tripping myself up when it comes to figuring out who is seeing what and who is entitled to doing what. The bug/feature noted above hasn’t helped, but that’s really not a very good excuse smiley
              Thanks,
              Matt

LOL. Try Google Chrome - it’s optimized for Ajax and may speed up the Manager for you.
