I am really keen to take MODx for a test drive and wondered if anyone could give me some direction as to how I could run it through VMPlayer or the like
    • You can find an online demo here (http://php.opensourcecms.com/scripts/details.php?scriptid=48&name=MODx) granted if you want to try it in a virtual machine you could setup something as well.

You would need to setup a hosting environment and then install MODx. That’s not too hard you could use something like XAMPP (http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html) and then install MODx.

      Hope that helps some,

      • Why do you need a VM? You can set up a hosting environment on any OS, it doesn’t even have to be an Apache web server. Even BadBlue on Windows98 ran its precursor Etomite as well as the earliest versions of MODx itself, before I replaced my old Compaq laptop with a used PowerBook. All you need is PHP and MySQL, which will also run on anything. MODx itself is just a set of PHP scripts. My next playground is going to be nginx (a very small, fast web server) on OpenSolaris; I have several sites hosted on an OpenSolaris server with Apache already. My current local development environment is an aging G4 iBook using MAMP.
