Just shootin’ from the hip, but would it work to build background images from text with the actual captcha text being a specific color?
For example:
"Please enter the red text in the image."

Probably not if I understand you correctly.
If someone was to write a spambot to decode one captcha/vericode word, then they only have to modify their bot to look for the word "red" (or whatever) and filter out all non-red pixels. In reality it would be a bit more complex as they would have to allow a certain tolerance either side of the target colour ("red" encompasses alot of slightly different colours), but compared to decoding text in images, probably quite trivial.
I think the strength of the MODx system is that its not used much, so is it really worth anyone writing a bot to crack it? If not, you are safe! On the other hand, I suspect that you would have to do little or no image processing to crack most sites that use it.
