Getting other DB fields with QuipLatestComments

I need to add some fields from another custom table to my QuipLatestComments results (e.g. user extended fields). I’d rather not hack the snippet (though I’ve tried without success). Am I right in thinking that pre/posthooks are only available when a user submits a comment, or can they be applied when returning comment results?
