I think I don’t completely understand quip.
All but my last page give the message:

This thread has been closed from taking new comments.
What did I do wrong?
www.tornooi.net online database for (sport) events in dutch.
To be redesigned, rewritten to modx with multiple languages...
ANY help appreciated, I cannot offer money but I can offer free advertising on the site. just message me.

Try adding &closeAfter=`0` to your call

That worked for me but like djemmers I'm confused as everything was working fine then the message suddenly appeared!
Thanks

I've just had exactly the same issue but the &closed=`0` did not work for me but &closeAfter=`0` did.
Phew that got me sweating.

This hit us this morning as well, well I got reports this morning, could have happened over the weekend, don't know, all comment thread sitewide suddenly report themselves as closed after working fine since installing quip a week or so ago.
&closeAfter=`0`
adding that fixed it for us as well. I don't see how this could have just happened by itself, we didn't do a quip update or a modx update, so that suggests there is some type of calendar type bug in quip itself that triggered base either on time after installation of quip, or calendar date.
