    Hi there,

I’m using Jot and modx since 4h and after googling a lot i’m still wondering: Isn’t there a way for threaded comments?

A kind of workaround or anything?

Would be a pity to leave modx behind just because of this ...

The Jot table seems to be setup for threaded comments (there is a parent field that is not being used) but I don’t think it was ever developed to be threaded. This would be a great addition to Jot.

        Hi there,

is there a way to only offer a Link to the comment-form?

This would help for my workaround for nested comments ...

          My workaround so far:

With help of Jots &tagid we can have more than one seperated Jot-instance per document.

I handle them this way, adding the following line in my comment-template:
          [[Jot? &action=`comments` &tagid=`[+comment.id+]`]]

So each comment itself has an Jot-instance, so you can comment the comment, and so on.

With help of css the comments can be arranged in a nested layout (margin-left).

My problem is now, that it’s really ugly to have for each jot-instance one form.

Is there a way to add an link to each form?

Maybe someone else is interested in nested commenting with jot and is more used to developing with modx etc.?

This is really terrible and unacceptable. Threaded comments are a requirement. That is a very needed feature to leave behind and completely takes away from Jot’s usefulness.

Are you offering to write a threaded commenting snippet and share it with the community?

In September, i’ll have more time, and will try to extend Quip features (Simple comments system for Revolution devellopped by Shaun as an exemple of Revo’s capacity).
I plan to add a very basic threaded comment system with bbcodes (prototype is working but it is far from release), and allowing ajax or direct submit.

However, it’ll need a lot of debug and feedback from users and php programmers and it’ll only work on MODx Revolution.

Any help or thoughts is welcome.

Shaun is likewise working on a very full-featured threaded solution that can power a forums. Lots of work to go but it’s quite impressive so far. Threading is definitely on the radar, though some folks prefer non-threaded forums/discussions as well and with just as much passion.

I am an avid fan of MODx and extensions like Jot. But the fact of the matter is, other blogging packages come with these things (ie threaded comments) fully featured out of the box. So that’s going to be the expectation. If I need to fill these holes writing snippets myself well then there isn’t much point and I’ll choose a different CMS solution.

I know you guys are working on these things and you’ve made great progress so far. I look forward to the day they are complete and MODx can really compete with the other big boy CMS’. In the meantime, I have a call with my employer today and I’ll have to think of what to say if they ask where the reply button went.

But that’s the point: MODx isn’t a dedicated blogging package per se, it’s a Content Management Framework. With very little effort you can create a fairly robust blog. If you need power-blogging though, go for a power-blogging platform. If the lack of a threaded comments right now is a deal breaker, then I would suggest you look for another solution elsewhere because today, it doesn’t exist in MODx.

You could also just as easily use something like Disqus or Intense Debate.
