Not from personal experience with Solaris and MODx together, but in general, I would recommend using the latest stable releases of each package (Apache, MySQL, PHP) for your platform. We also recommend using PHP5, but most recent releases of PHP4 certainly work, and similarly, Apache 2.x is recommended over Apache 1.x, but there is no known issue with using reasonably recent versions of any of the packages.
I don’t have a copy of MySQL 5 running anywhere at the moment, but Ryan says its running fine on version 5 for him without any issues. But we haven’t done extensive testing with MySQL 5 by any means.

Hello,
I’m new to MODx, but I’m excited because it looks very promising
I just realized my provider has MySQL 4.0.1.5 installed, but MySQL 4.1.x or higher is recommended. So my question is: may using 4.0.x cause any problems, and, if so, what kind of trouble? Thanks!
Thanks for MODx - I love it!
