    Hi all. After a full day of trying to figure out the user permissions I finally have it working, but I can’t figure something out. I have 100+ users that each need to be able to edit only their own content; no problem with 100 user groups and 100 document groups. The problem is that although every user will have their own unique directory, all 100 directories are inside a parent directory which is editable by everybody. Is there any way to avoid having that parent folder be editable by all 100 users?

    Example directory tree for user PLNU:
    mywebsite.com
    --> Schools and Courses (default document group)
    --> --> PLNU (plnu document group)
    --> --> --> document 1
    --> --> --> document 2

    User PLNU should ideally be able only to edit folder PLNU and it’s children, but not edit the parent folder. Otherwise they can edit "Schools and Courses", create documents inside "Schools and Courses", and even move content to the root directory. I kind of need to keep all the user folders inside a master folder so they can be sorted and displayed together (in a list of member schools).

    Does that make sense? The proposed idea in this thread (http://modxcms.com/forums/index.php/topic,1086.0.html) would be perfect; just hide everything above the assigned folder. Doesn’t look like that’s possible though.

    Any help would be super appreciated. If there’s a better way to accomplish this, I’d love to hear ideas! Thanks.

      Interesting problem. I’m having it too. The only way user "X" can get to his page to edit is to use the search feature and specify the ID number of the page or something. Is there some way to turn off this "tree trimming" feature? I don’t care if my users can see the tree. The permissions will keep them from making changes to stuff they shouldn’t.

        Hey Jared. That’s an interesting fix. I didn’t even know that search was there... So it is possible to set the permissions of parents and children differently, the children just don’t show up in the tree.

        Personally, I really like the "tree trimming", but as we’ve both discovered, it doesn’t work in this situation. I’d love to see it display only as much of the parent items as necessary to show the permissable children. Maybe gray-out/disable the parent items that the user doesn’t have permission to access, just for clarity’s sake. That’d be the best of both worlds.

        Unfortunately, that’s so far beyond my PHP/MySQL it’s not even funny!

          Hi Jared,

          Would you mind logging the tree trimming/parent viewing feature request in the bugtracker so you’ll get notified for updates. Of course any code suggestions would be appreciated too. wink

            Just wondering if this has been implemented yet?

              For anyone else who stumbled across this like I did, Susan’s suggestion of enabling Show Protected Pages in Configuration -> Interface & Features did the trick perfectly (for my needs at least) - the user can see all documents in the tree, but only has access to those they have access permissions for, the rest are greyed out.
