It happens, and BTW, you can install to a subfolder, but if you enable the .htaccess file (by renaming it to .htaccess from ht.access), you’ll need to edit the RewriteRule to include the full path to your /subfolder/index.php or include a RewriteBase /subfolder/ line in the file immediately following the RewriteEngine On line.
when accessing index.php from the root, I get this:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: startcmssession() in /home/admin/domains/thisismydomainname.com/public_html/index.php on line 85
Is this a common error? What’s missing? I went through the install and all seemed ok. The creating ModX database message was shown as the last message displayed. Left running overnight.

Sounds like a problem with the config file. If you were doing an upgrade, it sounds like the installer may not have been able to write to the manager/includes/config.inc.php file. This is where the StartCMSSession() function resides; it was added recently, so that’s what makes me think either the upgrade did not complete properly, or there is a permissions problem with the config.inc.php file.
This is a new install. I changed config.inc.php permissions to 777 in ftp. Still get the same error when reloading the page..?

Did you restrat the installer from scratch after making the change?

Uh no, I didn’t see that documented anywhere. Will that fix it?
