Recently I have experienced "unexpected e-mail" problem when transferring MODx-driven site from one hosting to another. Guys, who provide the target hosting, have turned off mail() function for security reasons, forcing all developers to implement the communication via authenticated SMTP. I think the problem seems to be not so rare...
Adjusting the whole site communication to use authenticated SMTP protocol I have discovered that the Jot snippet - when notifying moderators/subscribers of new posts - makes a direct call to mail() function instead of calling well worked out MODx’s PHPMailer class which is able to send e-mails via both mail() function and SMTP protocol. I have replaced direct mail() calls in Jot snippet with a call to PHPMailer instance. Now adjusting the site communication might be done in a "one center of power" - by setting mail configuration variables in PHPMailer class ("manager/includes/controls/class.phpmailer.php").
The patched Jot snippet of various versions may be found on this page: http://setpro.net.pl/software/modx-stuff

Concluding from visitors statistics of my site I must admit that some people are interested in patched MODx’s components. I have posted on my site an article devoted to this topic, i.e. careful programming of e-mail communication while designing sites. You can find it here http://setpro.net.pl/software/modx-stuff
