Ok, after beating my head against the wall trying to get SMF Forums to work with Modx, I’m thinking about using jot to accomplish the task since it supports email notifications, captchas, and badword filtering. It won’t be anything fancy but it’ll hopefully be seamless with modx and could possibly develop into something more robust later on. Right now, I just need some basic forum functionality on my site and SMF is making me nauseous.
Has anyone tried and succeeded/failed before? Did a quick search but didn’t find anything; want to make sure I’m not wasting my time.

It really depends on how many users and what volume you’re anticipating. For small groups of known individuals, with relatively low post counts, I think Jot would be fine along with NewsPublisher (for starting threads).

We expect ~1000 users by the end of 2008 (thats our sales target anyways; its a subscription training site) and will probably feature a "discuss this" function for each lesson/chapter of content. Since we’re expecting 100-200 lessons, with x amount of user-created threads, I wouldn’t rule out ~20-50,000 posts, ballpark.
What scalability issues do you think we’ll hit with with Jot?

I wouldn’t think it’d be a good fit for Jot.

I respect your opinion but I’d like to know why you wouldn’t think it would be a good fit. Is it poorly-written? No caching? I’ve only read thru the dox on the wiki; I haven’t looked at the code. I could see some functional/feature limitations but quite frankly, SMF looks like garbage: globals everywhere, awful UI/code separation, nasty templating, and too much bloat. And the integration is buggy -- hackish integrations like that are never nice.
I really don’t want to go back to Joomla...

User controls mostly, administration too. MODx here itself is not even using an integrated forum btw, just a similarly skinned one and the SMF API for a loose coupling and permissions checks. That might be another avenue to pursue.

user controls and administration I can deal with -- its a closed site (only paying subscribers can post) so I don’t foresee too much spam/script kiddy problems. I will take a look at the SMF API -- thanks, didn’t know it existed. I’m also going to take a look Phorum: another lightweight forum that’s apparently integration-friendly (has a separate Authenticator/API for external logins).

Please report how it goes with Phorum, It seems like a lot of people have trouble with SMF so it might be nice to have another option to suggest for people.

This has not yet been done. There were some plans by someone a while back, but then the embedding module was not yet fully finished and the project probably stranded at some point. If you can program PHP and understand the internals of MODX, we can help you with writing a connector class for the Phorum embed module though.
Looks like the attempt failed/was abandoned. I’ll see if I can dig up what was started and see if it’s worth it to continue. As for Hypercubed ditto/jot forum: not bad at all. You should be able to use the NewsPublisher for creating threads (see above).
