I know that several of the core dev team uses eclipse and like it very much. I personally have no experience with it though.

Eclipse will take something to getting use to but it is great with so many plugins. You could also use it to develop more plugin or java related project and of course php, html, etc.

The only one thing that I want to offer one warning is that if you have a CVS project in eclipse that point to a server and if that server is down for some reason your eclipse will lock up really good!

It’s really nice, and has a plugin for SVN, as well as for just about anything you could imagine doing, including some very nice Web development tools, unfortunately many of them are Windows-only!

I must admit, however, that I still rely on my trusty SubEthaEdit, because I haven’t taken the time to really learn how to use the full IDE system. I’ve used it enough to know that I’m probably taking more time developing than if I were to learn to use Eclipse properly. Actually, while I’m not sure, I think I can set it up to use SubEthaEdit as the code editor. I really need to settle down and spend a day or two getting it under control. Well, and it is a little slow on this old, memory-poor Powerbook.

It can. The problem is you have to learn how to use it, just as you would have to learn how to use a word processor or a spreadsheet to use it effectively. It has a lot of advantages over just a code editor. And the various plug-ins include php and all kinds of web development tools.

The biggest reason I haven’t really started working with it until I’m comfortable with it is that it’s kind of slow on this 5-year old low-memory Powerbook. I suppose that’s really no excuse. I’ll never learn something new if I don’t do it!

Your posts motivated me to clean up my computer, download the latest Eclipse, and I’m in the process of setting it up again.

I found two PHP plug-ins, but one, Xored Software’s TruStudio, looks very nice, it’s licensing is not what I like; its free version is a crippled version of the Pro, and they sell that on a "subscription" basis of $95 a year. Next year? Who knows. I don’t trust these kinds of licenses.

The other I’ve used successfully before, PHPEclipse from http://www.phpeclipse.de/tiki-view_articles.php. I’ll go with that again.

There’s also a SubClipse Subversion plugin that I’ve used before, and lots of other interesting plugins for Javascript, HTML, CSS, and anything else you might be able to think of. I picked up a "Foghorn" plugin that makes noise when there is an error in your code, and dbStudio, which looks good for accessing my databases, both local and remote.

I’m thinking of opening a new thread in Off Topic to journalize my installation and setup, as well as learning how to use it.

One key area that I was having difficult time to get a hang of is "perspective" in Eclipse. Perspecitive is how Eclipse let you work on a differenent kind of project with different personalities but it is sure hard to figure out how to switch between them.

If you are willing to take the time to learn Eclipse it will payoff in the long run since many project including open source and commercial is jumping into Eclipse "band-wagon" lately.

Oh, one more thing if you start using Eclipse make sure you get the version that you have a plugin that you want to work with. The plugin is design to work with a certain version of Eclipse otherwise you will have a real headache!

                    Good luck with Eclipse!
