What if we used an AJAX interface similar to google.com/ig for the manager menu, tree, and mainpage.
Then we could get rid of all those layout options and just let the user dynamically move the components around and then just save their locations to the db just like google does.
This would be really slick if this is possible....
It could be likened to dreamweavers basic interface for the web.......
An AJAX interface would be very nice indeed! Dragging and dropping blocks is great to personalize the interface. But remember that lay-out may provide some meaning to the content. Hence, this should be an option per block... so administrators can simply push some block positions (e.g. news above) and leave some to be set by the editors/users.

The first step to getting there is going to be getting rid of the frames. (And you can put a tickmark next to that one now). However, the way that the manager is set up, there aren’t a lot of various pieces scattered about; each page is pretty well-focused on a specific function. Perhaps we can do this on the manager home page though, as there will be several summary blocks there... really cool idea! (Helps that Script.aculo.us is already integrated, too...)
