        Was it a fresh install or an upgrade ?

        The problem lies with creating DB tables, it would maybe not occur with the upgrade since they already exist.

        I know EasyPHP ( 1.8 ) fairly well, know my way around httpd.conf and php.ini. I have installed many CMS with it. It does NOT work with MODx 0.9.0, on a fresh install. It does work with XAMPP 1.4.16.

        Upgrade might work but if fresh install works for you with EasyPHP, tell us how you achieve this I’d be curious...

          Alright guys, let’s get this one firgured out. I just downloaded EasyPHP 1.8, installed, changed nothing in the configuration, created a database called modx_cms, installed MODx 0.9.0, ran the installation, and had no problems whatsoever during the installation. In addition everything seems to be working fine with the demo site as well. So, I’ve got it working with default installations of XAMPP 1.4.16 and EasyPHP 1.8. If there is a problem, it must be with a custom configuration option in your local environment.

          Those of you having trouble, might want to make sure you are starting with a clean database and no config file. I cannot reproduce this specific problem.

            I did it with refresh and upgrade install. They work just fine!

            I create the database via phpmyadmin then do the install.

              OK Jason & chanh, I’ll reset my php.ini and httpd.conf to EasyPHP’s default values and try again. I only have mod_rewrite and GD2 enabled, I don’t see how it would affect table creation but I’ll do this and report.

              Thanks for taking the time to get to the bottom of this laugh

                mod_rewrite would only help (I actually enabled it before starting up EasyPHP, I guess I stretched the truth a little) and GD2 shouldn’t change a thing associated with database table creation. I’m trying to imagine what it is that is causing this situation, and only two things come to mind currently, one being the tables created previously on a failed installation, or possibly something to do with the format of the SQL file (maybe it’s not valid for certain locales? I’m reaching for anything at this point... huh)

                  I tried again thinking that if I didn’t create the database first, that might have an effect on the table creation process, but once again, the install worked flawlessly, even when the database did not exist before I clicked Install Now. Very puzzling...

                    Jason, I installed a fresh instance of EasyPHP1.8 with default options : it does not work, I have the same problem. And as for the explanation, in my case it’s not tables created from a previous install. Maybe it’s a locales problem, yes. Those who have had the same database creation problem should tell us what is their locale, it could help. I have tried to list users experiencing the same problem.

                    I have identified 4 threads about this problem :
                    http://modxcms.com/forums/index.php/topic,941.0.html
                    http://modxcms.com/forums/index.php/topic,1292.0.html
                    http://modxcms.com/forums/index.php/topic,951.0.html
                    and in the french forums : http://modxcms.com/forums/index.php/topic,1317.0.html

                    There is one ticket open about this : http://modxcms.com/bugs/?do=details&id=81

                    So far we have :

                    Running EasyPHP 1.8 with no problem
                    * chanh
                    * opengeek

                    Running EasyPHP 1.8 with create tables problem
                    * nissai (see french forums)
                    * mrruben5
                    * pjm
                    * lonely
                    * TLoF
                    * izo

                    Maybe we should PM them and ask about their locale.

                    Edit :

                    I clicked the Show MySQL system variables link in phpMyAdmin and compared EasyPHP 1.8 settings with XAMPP’s. There is something funny with EasyPHP’s setting for collation database and collation server, it returns latin1_swedish_ci insted of latin1_general_ci... I can’t make sense of this but maybe you will ?

                    Here are the results

                    EasyPHP gives me :
                    character set client utf8 latin1
                    character set connection utf8 latin1
                    character set database latin1 latin1
                    character set results utf8 latin1
                    character set server latin1 latin1
                    character set system utf8 utf8
                    collation connection utf8_general_ci latin1_swedish_ci
                    collation database latin1_swedish_ci latin1_swedish_ci
                    collation server latin1_swedish_ci latin1_swedish_ci

                    XAMPP gives me :
                    character set client utf8 latin1
                    character set connection utf8 latin1
                    character set database latin1 latin1
                    character set results utf8 latin1
                    character set server latin1 latin1
                    character set system utf8 utf8
                    collation connection utf8_general_ci latin1_general_ci
                    collation database latin1_general_ci latin1_general_ci
                    collation server latin1_general_ci latin1_general_ci

                      I have a somewhat related problem; it involves mySQL versions. The remote site contains the content for German, French and Italian, and dipslays it just fine. However, when I dump the database to my local OS X server, it makes total garbage out of the non-English characters. I have been very careful not to upload any content from the local database to the remote database! The version of MySQL on the remote site also uses metadata for table type that causes errors on my local version.

                      The remote site is using version 1.1.14 and my local site is using version 4.0.17

                      So perhaps it’s more of a MySQL versioning problem.
