to do an iCal-feature to offer event data for a personal calendar (thunderbird calendar, ...) using this idea which I had also

So I want to offer a (download) link for this data for each event.
It works so far as the iCal (.ics) is produced and looks as it should. But it will not load in Windows Calendar nor in Thunderbird (not a propper file format).
The Problem as far as I see may be the line feeds in the DESCRIPTION part. If I delete all content exept for one line it will load (but I’ve seen working .ics files containing line feeds there). There’s no difference to be seen between an .ics file that works and mine.
btw. content type is text/plain, template blank, RTF off, Content Disposition to inline (download).
EDIT:
It is the CR that causes the problem. If replaced with "\n" all works fine.
