Once you have retrieved that value (from a placeholder? or TV?) and stored in a PHP variable, you can format it with e.g.
http://ch.php.net/number_format or http://ch.php.net/manual/en/function.money-format.php

you could use a wrapper snippet just for that, or re-declare the placeholder with $modx->setPlaceholder(), if you need to re-use it in a chunk tpl.

e.g. [!moneyFormat? &input=`[+price+]`!]

<?php
if($input) {
$output = number_format($input, 2, '.', ' ');
return $output;
}
?>

Maybe try this custom PHx modifier to format the number: http://wiki.modxcms.com/index.php/PHx/CustomModifiers#phx:price_format

As for the issue with Ditto, you could provide the document ID by adding an input variable to the custom snippet:

[!mysnippet? docId=`[+id+]`!]

Then let the snippet process the data and return the field you want. Note that the GetField snippet already can do this.
