Maybe this Ditto related section is a more appropriate place for my question, so here we go.
I prefer asking here for directions in order to spend my time developing towards a potentially good solution.
This is what I want to accomplish:
1) an authenticated user writes an article (with tinymce), but he should have the possibility to select a category (with a plain "select" field, from a list of possible categories) and associate it with the article;
2) Ditto (or whatever snippet/plugin you can suggest) will manage the submission, and create the article page storing also the user-associated category information;
3) Looking at the summary of the last three submitted articles, I want to display not only the articles (with usual things: title, time, etc.) but also an icon corresponding to the associated category; that is, if the category of the article is "birds", I want a bird icon on the side of the article, if the category was "cats", I want a cat icon on the side of the article;
4) The way the icon is displayed I want to be chosen through a logic external to Ditto (some php code, and css of course); e.g. I want a big icon for the last article, a smaller icon for the older article, and an even smaller one for the oldest article. Besides, I want the icon for the first article to be on its left side, on the right for the second article, and again on the left for the third one: these are just examples... maybe I want the icon for the third article not to be displayed at all, etc.
It will be very nice to read your eventual suggestions to accomplish this task in the best way you can think to.
