hello, I’m new to modx and all CMSs in general, so bear with me. I’ve set up the access permissions, but they don’t seem to work all that well. For example, I set up a user (John) who is assigned to user group "News" and, therefore, has access to the document group "News Pages". I gave John the ability to create, edit, save, and delete documents (b/c he needs those abilities as news editor), but I only want him to have those abilities on the News Pages which I designate. Unfortunately, he has those abilities for all pages in the site. How do I correct this problem?

    Thank you,
    sandthipe

      Hi sandthipe,

      Welcome to Operation MODx.

In the cms all documents are treated as public until they are assigned to a document group that user groups are assigned to.

        Hi sandthipe !

First of all warm welcome to world of MODx smiley

Let me add some explanation to my friend’s post...

Create a document group named "Site DOCS". Put all site documents, which you dont want to be viewable to other users, in this document group.

How you will do this, when you edit document, scroll down, you will see Access permissions Panel, tick the box against "Site DOCS" and hit Save.

Now the other document group members will not able to see the documents,

I think it makes sense, however if you need more help on this, just shout here wink and we’ll try our best to help you !

        Best wishes and regards,

        zi

Thanks for the welcome. I think I have the permissions working now and honestly have no idea what I did right or wrong. I was experimenting with Typo3 because it seems to be a great package but I soon realized that it would take many month’s to get a grip on it so I am giving ModX a try. So far it seems promising though a good tutorial would sure help people get started. The beginners tutorial on Typo3 was over a 100 pages I believe. Lot’s of good documentation there but unless you plan to make it your career you’d better look for something more like ModX. Mambo and the like are just too canned for my needs so I’m counting on ModX to be a winner. smiley

Thanks for the feedback ixie01. We really want to make it simpler and quicker for new users to get up and running fast with MODx. Some of it’s strong points in fact are it’s flexibility, ease of doing things and speed in which you can get things done. Now we just have to make that abundantly clear to people!
