I have a Ditto (v2.0.2) call that displays tagLinks so that browsers can filter news summaries by ’category’. How do I insert an "active" or "current" class for whichever tag link has been clicked and is currently being used to filter the list of news articles?

There is no current way to make the active tag in tagLinks selectable via css. Feel free to file a feature request in the Ditto bugtracker.
For now, you can use the tags and tagLinks modx placeholders Ditto sets to show the tags currently being filtered. For an example of this, watch the Ditto tagging screencast.
