display parameter

I’m using Ditto 2.1beta 3 and didn’t use the display parameter in my Ditto call. I found it’s listing only 3 documents then, and it was a bit confusing to figure out why. After setting &display=`all` it started to show everything.

Wouldn’t it be more intuitive if without specifying the display parameter, it would default to display all?

That’s an interesting idea, and a good suggestion I think. You might file a feature request at the Ditto Trac install. After reviewing existing tickets you can open a new one if it’s not already there (it isn’t).

ok - I filed a new ticket #85 for this.

Implementing this would break backwards compatibility with all previous Ditto installs as this is the second most customized parameter (behind startID/parents). However, if this was tied in with the upcoming templating system changes it might be possible.

If it’s the second most customized parameter, then backwards compatibility would only affect a minority, as it would only be relevant for those who explicitly want to display 3 documents, and who are doing so without using the &display parameter. Maybe for taking care of them, the update routine to 0.9.7 could add &display=`3` to their Ditto calls?

I would also appreciate if for the demo installation we would have working examples of Ditto/Reflect calls (the monthly archive is broken), reflecting the actual state of development and best practices to achieve things, and therefore no longer using startID. And I think if that call in the demo would contain the &display=`all` parameter (or any other number for &display), it would be easier to get an understanding for how things work. I think it’s rare that people actually want to list only the default 3 documents for their Ditto listings and therefore don’t use the parameter. Most people probably will have to find that parameter somehow. Yeah, it’s in the documentation, but on the other hand, we point people also to the demo install for getting an understanding of MODx. To get things right from the beginning from there would make an easier learning experience.

I know it’s a lot of work to keep track of all those tiny details, and I’m grateful for all the efforts and contributions.
