I have seen a few references to Tattoo; just enough to thoroughly confuse me.

Is Tattoo going to be a superset of ModX? A different product built on the same engine, with import-export of content between it and ModX? An entirely different product?

A related question: since ModX is itself still a young product, why would a parallel (?) effort be launched before ModX is mature?

Tattoo will be taking full advantage of the new features in PHP 5. However, most inexpensive shared hosting companies will not be upgrading to PHP 5 any time soon, which would prevent a lot of people from using it.

Okay, but does that mean Tattoo will be a superset of ModX, providing enhanced features for servers that can support them but will otherwise be 100% compatible with ModX (not backward-compatible but forward-compatible)? This is what I take from your response so far.

Russ, thanks for your interest in this. Originally, I believe we were going to rebrand MODx as Tattoo at version 1.0, but like they say, ’if you wanna make god laugh, make a plan’. So Susan is absolutely correct; it will be focused on taking advantage of PHP5, and has been rewritten from scratch to do so.

Tattoo will also introduce a lot of new advanced features like multiple DB platform support, advanced localization, content revisioning, and federated identity/security, and will be targeted at a medium to enterprise-level business audience, though will certainly be accessible to anyone with the ability to deploy PHP 5 applications. Tattoo is based on MODx concepts and most likely will include MODx to Tattoo migration tools, and possibly MODx and Etomite parser emulation for supporting as many existing API calls and markup (a.k.a. tags) from those systems as possible.

The focus on PHP 5 features, the rewrite into a pure OO system with a completely new data model, along with a slightly different marketing position should keep MODx and Tattoo off of parallel lines and in their own niche communities. And Tattoo still has some more time under the gun before it’s ready to go.

I hope that helps remedy the confusion until official announcements solve the riddle.

I’m in no position to make the decision, ever since our lead developer had taken the time to explain it. But to make thing clearer, I believe we won’t sacrifice MODx, by the time we release Tattoo. Remember, how long does it take MODx to evolve into its current state? It’s not including the one from etomite era, where the core code had been created and designed.

I believe we will try every possible way to speed up the process of releasing Tattoo, but as far as my understanding goes, MODx will still play quite a big major role to introduce our community to the world, while Tattoo will be our big secret weapon that will make a breakthrough to the world of CMS/CMF with OpenSource PHP and MySql (plus other db server). Did I make you a lot more confuse?

PS: This is just my interpretation of the current progress that we will take on, so don’t take it as an absolute answer. More will be announced officially, so before than, just wait patiently, and learn to be patient, when dealing with MODx lead developer named Jason wink (Never make public announcement before releasing the product, except for all the teasing of the future supported feature in Tattoo, but when the time comes, I will assure you that you won’t be disappointed)

            Sincerely,
              Wendy Novianto

I appreciate the candor and info. I’m almost there. I’m not fishing for dates or feature info at this point, just:

              1. Will Tattoo be open-source in the same spirit as ModX?

              2. Will the architecture of ModX (not talking per se about look-and-feel) be duplicated in Tattoo - chunks, TVs, snippets, widgets, etc? In other words, will a learning curve invested in ModX be transferable totally to Tattoo? Mainly? Partly? Granting that new features in Tattoo will, of course, have their own learning curve.

                1) Tattoo will unquestionably be open source.

                2) The architecture for MODx and for Tattoo will increasingly become more simple, and should closely resemble each other. They probably won’t be clones, and MODx sites should be able to run in Tattoo deployments regardless though, as indicated earlier in this thread by the compatibility plugin. The reverse will not necessarily be true though due to Tattoo’s current PHP5-only path.

And date-wise, Tattoo is a long way off from being ready for primetime. No remote abilty to even guess at a realistic timeframe. I’d say we’ll slow down a bit on the MODx pace too. For example, we might only have 4 or 5 releases this year (as opposed to the 8 since the project’s inception wink )

Any chance Tattoo will be brought up to the level of Speartek?
