Sorting with ö or other odd characters with custom sort

I am trying to sort a ditto call by title, however the results using special chars like ö or any other odd character are appearing before they should. For example I have something like this:

Ötsch
Astro
Böheim
Bartel

My charset is utf-8. Is there a way for me to correct this?

BTW I am using Ditto 2.0.2 that came with my install of 0.9.6.

I may be off-base here, but I suspect that this has to do with the collation configuration of your database.

Could be, since I have not knowledge of this I can’t say if it makes sense. I will look into it, thanks for the tip.

I am reviving this old post o’ mine. I worked on the collation issue and it did not resolve the problem (sure learned a lo about collation stuff). You can follow that story at this other post:

Anyway, after much help from the gang it appears that the problem is with the strnatcmp() function that gets called during custom sorting. It is my understanding that when sorting from anything other than the default fields will cause it to go through the strnatcmp() function.

When I look at the debug console the correct sorting shows up in the ’Prefetch Data’ tab, but in the ’Retreived Data’ tab the order is all messed up.

Is there any way to disable strnatcmp() and return the custom sort in the same way you would the standard sort?

Maybe for testing, you can comment out these two lines in ditto.class.php:

The strnatcmp() php function is called in the sortOrder function of the the Ditto class, and those two lines above are the only one calling it I’ve found. So commenting them out should help narrowing the problem.

I think another way to do the same thing would be to just add the following line as the first line of the customsort() function:



That should prevent customsort() from altering the data (assuming that it’s already in the proper order).

That was a great recommendation, sorting of the ö is correct now. I will need to keep this in mind with other customsort situations. Seriously, you guys rock!!!

It is so nice to finally look at the page and see the correct sort order, what a relief.

I have the same problem with the Norwegian Æ Ø Å, and none of the suggestions above did any good. Could there be another way to do this?

Where are those chars supposed to go in the sort? I am guessing that Æ and Å should be close to the A. When I sort them in my hacked ditto they come last after Z.

Sorry for not telling. They come after Z, that is in the end of the alphabet. Like this: Q R S T U V W X Z Æ Ø Å .
