Hate to say it... but in this call:
[[Ditto? &startID=`17` &sortBy=`tvdate` &sortDir=`ASC` &tpl=`ditto_works` &summarize=`5`]]
sorting TV is ignored and createdon is used instead. My tv "date" has date widget on.

That will not work. Ditto, just like any PHP application, can only natively sort by unixtimestamps. Therefore, your TV date must output a unix timestamp. This has been discussed twice before; once regarding NewsListing and again regarding Ditto. Please look for the related thread in this forum.
